The Preserver Party is the first independent party in recent history to have major political success in America. Led by the charismatic President Douglas Carlson the preserver party had existed as disparate groups of disgruntled Americans for years but Dark Day propelled them to the front page and living rooms of every American. During the chaos and horror of Dark Day, it was Douglas Carlson who rallied and organized the State of Maryland’s response as well as helping to stabilize Washington DC. Previously a democrat Carlson broke with his party shortly after Dark Day claiming that both parties had failed the American people on Dark Day and that neither had the mandate or the right to keep running the show. He announced that he would be running under the recently restructured Preserver Party with the slogan “Preserving America”.
The Preserver Party’s initial victories took place a few months after Dark Day when half a dozen senators and congressmen switched to the new party. In addition, nearly twenty representatives had died during Dark Day. In nearly all of the elections to replace them the winners were all Preserver Party candidates. The press was full of rumors of voter fixing or intimidation. Of bribes and other shadowy deals but the world was still reeling from what it thought was the end of the world to care too much about a few stories of voter fraud.
In what was the most contentious presidential race for decades Douglas Carlson won the election for President in 2000 amid accusations of mishandling of ballots in Florida. The now infamous hanging chads that sealed the narrow margin from Vice President Al Gore. After weeks of legal battles and rumors about inappropriate behavior, Al Gore ceded the election and the Preserver Party was in control.
